MCBA: Over 100 Years of Excellence!

We are one of the oldest Bar Associations in the State of Florida, founded in 1902. Steeped in
history, with a vision for the future – we are the Manatee County Bar Association.

WHO WE ARE

The Manatee County Bar Association is one of the oldest Bar Associations in the State of Florida, founded in 1902, and incorporated in 1965.  Our “founding father”, lawyer John Hamilton Gillespie, is credited for bringing golf to Florida! What started with just a handful of members, has grown to several hundred law professionals, committed to promoting respect for and understanding of the law; enhancing professional growth, improving the quality of justice; and, fostering fulfillment, excellence, and collegiality among its members.
Our history is rich, and our future is bright!

WHAT WE DO

Our original stated purpose is “inculcating in its members the principles and duties of service to the public, improving the administration of justice and advancing the science of jurisprudence among the members; maintaining the highest standards in the profession of law in the County of Manatee and in the State of Florida; and maintaining and promoting social and recreational gatherings in order
to provide for a cooperative spirit among the members of the Bar and their families.”

While the faces have changed and the practice of law has evolved, the Manatee County Bar Association has remained steadfast to that purpose, fostering a unified, professional and mostly harmonious bar association with a rich history of service among the bench, the bar, and to the public. Its members continue to nurture a small town communal spirit while adapting to and embracing the growth and change that is reflective of the County of Manatee.

WHERE TO FIND US

Of course, you will find our members at their law firms throughout Manatee and Sarasota counties.  But, did you know you may also find them participating in our MCBA community programs?  They may be volunteering to coordinate a student art exhibit at the Manatee County Judicial Center, where student artwork is put on display annually.  You may find our Young Lawyers Division volunteering at events with Big Brothers Big Sisters
and our members coordinating food drives for local food banks, spearheading “clean ups” for our local beaches and roadways, as well as providing a pleasant, creative oasis known as the “Children’s Waiting Room” at the Judicial Center.

Our members may be found facilitating a “Wills for Heroes” event, participating in classroom studies at local schools or judging a high school essay contest.  They also can be found assisting groups such as “Habitat for Humanity – Manatee” or “Step Up Suncoast”.  That is in addition to the many “pro bono” hours many of our attorneys donate each year through groups such as Legal Aid Manasota.
